Why Frey Must Go
-
Homelessness crisis. When Frey first ran for mayor in 2017, he promised to end homelessness in 5 years. In 2025, high numbers of neighbors remain unhoused, despite his boasts that homelessness has declined. Mayor Frey hasn’t done enough to scale up innovative best practices and effective solutions like Avivo Village.
-
Public safety. Mayor Frey’s approach to public safety has centered around hiring more police. And yet he has not achieved great influence over the police department: in 2021, he banned no knock warrants, and one year later Amir Locke was killed during a no-knock police raid, and he wasn’t even a suspect. There has still been no criminal accountability for Amir Locke’s murder.

Response to George Floyd’s murder. The mayor was notably absent and unprepared, and offered minimal direction. Read it here: independent after-action review.
-
Ineffective Manager. Frey doesn’t build consensus well. He has used his veto power against the city council more than the previous two mayors combined. In 2022, the Office of Performance and Innovation, an internationally awarded and mostly black department, raised concerns about the city’s “racist, toxic” work culture. He then gutted the office in retaliation.
